MTH501 - Linear Algebra and Calculus

School : Faculty of Engineering and Applied Sciences-
Faculty :

Prerequisit Course : No Pre-Requisit Courses

Credit Hours : 3.00

Offer For : Under Graduate

Course Description :

This course consists of two main parts. The first part considers basic concepts of linear algebra with applications. This part starts with techniques for solving a system of linear equations along with reducing a matrix its reduced echelon form. Then, linear combination between vectors in linear algebra is presented and the notion of linear independence/dependence is introduced. Computation and interpretation of a rank of a matrix is also given with an application to determining the solution nature of a system of linear equations. The problem of eigenvalues and eigenvectors is then presented with applications to problems such as matrix exponentiation and matrix diagonalization. In the second part, basic background on single/multiple variables calculus and ordinary/partial differential equations is presented. In the single variable calculus, topics presented include limits, differentiation, Indefinite/definite integration, and series expansion of a single variable function. For multi-variable calculus, partial differentiation, and multiple integrals are presented with different applications. For ordinary differential equations, analytical techniques for solving both first-order differential equations and linear differential equations of second order and higher orders are presented. Partial differential equations part covers the separation of variables technique with application to wave, heat and Laplace equations.

MTH502 - Probability and Statistics

School : Faculty of Engineering and Applied Sciences-
Faculty :

Prerequisit Course : No Pre-Requisit Courses

Credit Hours : 3.00

Offer For : Under Graduate

Course Description :

The first part of this course provides the student with a solid and comprehensive background in probability theory with single/multiple random variables. It starts with basic concepts in probability theory such as probability axioms, probability theorems, counting techniques, conditional probability, Bayes’ theorem and law of total probability. Then, the notion of random variables is introduced in both discrete and continuous settings along with a set of important distributions. The extension to the multiple random variables case is considered with an emphasis on the bivariate case. Techniques for determining the distribution of a function of random variables are presented with an application on deriving sampling distributions. Based on this background, the second part of the course describes elementary inferential statistical tools from both theoretical and computational points of view. The estimation problem is presented for different cases based on one and two populations. The test of hypothesis problem is introduced as a standalone problem and as an alternative view of the confidence interval problem. The regression problem is also discussed where the techniques of both estimation and test of hypothesis problems are heavily used to build statistical inference about regression coefficients.

Course Description :

Survey of human body structure and function. Starting at biological macro-molecules, levels of organization, cells, tissues and ending at the level of human body systems (skeletal, muscular, nervous, cardiovascular, respiratory and digestive systems). Topics include human inheritance (from chromosomes to biotechnology), human reproduction (male and female anatomy and physiology), fetal development and birth. Students will be introduced as well to the genome structure and function, gene expression, protein synthesis, proteomics, and transcriptomics and role in human biology. For the Lab part, students will be introduced to the laboratory equipment. The goal of this lab is to get students to be acquainted with the different technologies that produced data such as sequences and real time PCR. Students will be performing laboratory work that include, bacterial growth using incubator, DNA isolation, RNA isolation, Protein isolation, electrophoresis of the three macro molecules, conventional PCR, Real time PCR, Sequencing of isolated DNA fragment.
